In a controversial twist prompting global introspection, parts of Pope Leo XIV’s latest encyclical, Magnifica Humanitas, may have been penned with the help of artificial intelligence. This revelation raises profound questions about the intersection of technology and morality, particularly as the Catholic Church navigates the evolving landscape of modern ethics.

Analysis conducted by Linch Zhang and presented on the forum LessWrong has indicated that segments of the encyclical could be between 40% to 100% generated by AI tools, according to the AI detection software Pangram. The study highlights several textual features consistent with AI-generated content, including an unusually frequent appearance of the term “genuinely,” a lexical choice often associated with outputs from Anthropic’s AI models.

During a dissection of the document, Zhang’s findings showed a staggering 62% of the first chapter flagged as AI-generated. In a parallel examination, the technology news outlet, The Verge, submitted roughly 2,000 words of the encyclical to Pangram, which estimated that 46% bore AI characteristics. This raises the question: Is the voice of God increasingly being mediated by algorithms?

However, the analysis by Pangram, recognized for its accuracy, is not infallible. While some portions of Magnifica Humanitas were deemed “essentially 0% AI,” including the introductory paragraphs of other recent encyclicals, variations in AI detection results could still suggest potential inaccuracies. In fact, Pangram has previously asserted a remarkably low false positive rate of about one in ten thousand, reinforcing its credibility in the AI research community.

The Vatican has yet to comment on these findings, leaving many to speculate about the implications of AI integration in theological discourse. Pope Leo XIV’s encyclical is a pioneering document, succeeding Pope Francis’ last letter in October 2024 and marking the Church's first formal engagement with the complexities of artificial intelligence—a subject that has ignited worldwide discussion about its socio-ethical ramifications. Notably, the pope delivered his encyclical alongside Christopher Olah, co-founder of Anthropic, cementing a significant partnership between ecclesiastical authority and technological innovation.

As humanity contemplates the nuances of an AI-driven future, Pope Leo XIV's assertion of being "profoundly human" amid the rise of machines echoes through the halls of the Vatican, compelling both clergy and laity to consider the moral paths forward.
