In a significant evolution of its platform, Bluesky is set to unveil a 'communities' feature, providing users with the opportunity to engage in more focused discussions around shared interests. This development, highlighted by head of product Alex Benzer, promises to create vibrant, smaller spaces where individuals can deepen their connections with like-minded users.
Scheduled for launch later this year, the communities will be built on the decentralized AT Protocol, which serves as the foundation of Bluesky. Benzer underscored that this initiative is an integral part of the 'Atmosphere,' the growing ecosystem surrounding the AT Protocol. "It's a new structure for everyone," Benzer noted, emphasizing its potential to reshape online interactions.
The anticipated feature will allow users to create, join, and participate in various communities, each with tailored updates and discussions. According to Benzer, the core functionalities of Bluesky will remain straightforward, but the real innovation lies in the flexibility these communities will offer.
"The magic comes from communities also existing on the open web," Benzer explained, signifying a commitment to enhancing customization options through integration with other tools and applications within the Atmosphere. These communities will generate unique handles that double as URLs, allowing users to access dedicated homepages tailored to specific interests. Builders will also be able to craft entirely customized experiences within these spaces.
Privacy is a key concern, and to address this, communities will operate under three distinct privacy settings: public, invite-only, and private. Each community will boast its own feed, ensuring that members have a personalized experience that fosters engagement.
This announcement follows recent remarks by Bluesky COO Rose Wang, who indicated a strategic pivot from being solely a 'public square' towards creating these more niche environments. The move draws inspiration from structures employed by popular platforms like Reddit, emphasizing a trend among social networks to facilitate deeper connections.

As Bluesky ventures into this exciting new realm of social interaction, many will be watching closely to see how these communities evolve and foster meaningful connections among users.
